The Expendables will sing Saturday at Zippers.

A bit of sunny California's surf sound is headed Saturday to Zippers, 326 S. Union Ave.

The Expendables is a four-piece, award-winning band from Santa Cruz. Known for a distinctive live performance and unique musical style - a mix of rock, reggae and surf - the quartet is fast becoming a full-time touring act.

The Pueblo stop is one of three in Colorado.

To date, The Expendables group has performed with in-demand acts such as Slightly Stoopid and reggae legend Eek-A-Mouse; appeared live on the Vans’ Warped Tour; and hosted its own radio show in Santa Cruz.

The Expendables have released three albums: "No Time to Worry," "Open Container" and "Gettin' Filthy." Critics have called the songs on these records catchy and radio-friendly.

In a nutshell: if you like groups like Sublime and 311, you'll dig The Expendables.

Check out myspace.com/theexpendables or theexpendables.net to learn more.

Tickets for the 9 p.m. show cost $10. Call 545-3313 for more information.

THE POLICE

The reunited group The Police, (from left) Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, acknowledge the audience after performing the song ‘Roxanne’ at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday.
The Police set Denver date
The most anticipated tour of the year will make a stop in Colorado.
The Police will perform at Pepsi Center in Denver June 9, concert promoter Live Nation announced Monday. An on-sale date for the Denver show has not been determined, but should be announced soon.
Speculation about a Police reunion tour has been rampant in recent weeks. Although one of the most successful groups in rock history, the band - Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland - has performed together on stage only once since its 1984 breakup.
Ticket prices in most cities are expected to range from $50 to $225, according to a press release, but Colorado prices have not been set.
There has been no word on additional Denver dates, although there is a six-day break between Denver and the next scheduled stop in Las Vegas, which leaves open the possibility of another Colorado date.

By MARVIN READTHE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

The year 2007 all fresh and bright, the winter run of the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center's Festival Friday begins today in the Jackson Conference Center.
The four-show season begins at half past 5 p.m. with Phat Daddy and the Phat Horn Doctors, a group known for a funky style and lots of soul.
The 12-year-old group was founded by vocalist Keith Stovall, and its nine members have played at a multiplicity of Colorado venues, as well as having made it to Las Vegas, New Orleans and Boston.
Today's show will be the band's third Festival Fridays appearance, a lively show that struts foot-stompin’ piano rhythms and high-energy saxophones. Two veteran Puebloans are in the group: Carlos Crull and Rob Smith.
There's an abundance of food and spirits available at the weekly event, with happy-hour, two-for-one specials served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The band will take to the stage at 6:30 p.m., with the event running until 9:30 p.m. in an atmosphere that features new, "club-like lighting," according to an arts center spokesman.
Tickets cost $4 in advance (295-7222) or $5 at the door.
The arts center and its box office are at 210 N. Santa Fe Ave.
Upcoming performances: Jan. 12, Daniel Cordova y Esperanza; Jan. 19, Steele; and Jan. 26, The Martini Shot.
